Is this a dog park?
No. Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley is a nonprofit animal shelter, not a dog park.
What kind of animals do you have?
We shelter and adopt out cats and dogs.
Can I get supplies for my pet?
Individuals in need can pick up food and supplies from 12:00 PM-6:00 PM, daily. Our inventory of food and supplies are dependent on community donations and can never be guaranteed.
I have a pet I would like to surrender, can you take it in?
Please call the shelter manager at 724-339-7388 x 1003 if you would like to discuss surrendering your animal.

How do I apply for adoption?
Adoption applications can be downloaded from our website (https://www.animalprotectors.net/adopt) or completed at the shelter at the time of adoption appointment.

What is your adoption process like?
Animal Protectors has a strong commitment to our animals and we strive to adopt them into loving homes. All applications are given careful consideration by the adoption committee and must meet the requirements listed below. Desired animals are put on hold for the applicant until the application is processed with a final decision affirmed. Multiple applications can be taken on one animal.
To Adopt:
1) Complete an application.
2) Bring a photo ID. (Applicants must be 18 years of age and older.)
3) All applicants will be interviewed by an adoption counselor.
4) All applicants must agree that the animal they wish to adopt will not be housed outdoors.
5) Renters should bring a copy of their lease. If living rent-free with a relative, said relative must give permission for the adoption.
6) Addresses provided on the application must be verifiable physical addresses.
7) A vet check on the individual's current pet(s) that show they are altered and up-to-date with immunizations.
8) On-site meet n’ greet with the prospective adopter's current dog if adopting a shelter dog.
9) Ability to provide a stable environment, proper veterinary care, and basic needs including food, exercise, and companionship.
10) Payment in full at the time of adoption by cash, debit card, credit card, or personal check.
11) Agreement from the adopter to contact Animal Protectors to make arrangements for the return of the animal if the adoption is not successful.
Do you provide vaccines and spay/neuter services for members of the community?
Beyond offering specific medical clinics, Animal Protectors does not offer vaccine or spay/neuter services to community pets. Check our events page or social media accounts for information on upcoming clinics. If you need immediate advice about medical services, please call our Medical Coordinator at 724-339-7388 x1002.
Why does Animal Protectors have so many pit bulls and pit-mixes for adoption?
Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley does not privilege or discriminate against any breed. Parts of our service area do produce a surplus of pit bulls and pit-mixes. While a portion of our canine residents are pitbulls or pit-mixes, many are not. Please take the time to research and meet all of the dogs we have for adoption.

If you are able to safely handle the animal, call 724-339-7388 x 1003 to schedule a potential intake appointment. If you are unable to handle the animal, contact your local police to alert animal control.
What should I do if I recognize a particular stray animal?
If you recognize a particular stray animal on our stray Facebook page, call 724-339-7388 to discuss next steps.
What is a ‘stray hold?’
Animals admitted as strays are held for a period of time to give potential owners an opportunity to reclaim them. Please do not inquire about adopting these animals until they are listed as adoptable on our website or social media accounts.
When is it appropriate to call the police?
Police in Pennsylvania are tasked with picking up stray dogs. If you find a stray dog and are uncomfortable handling it, you should call your local police Additionally, if you believe you have been a direct witness to animal cruelty it is appropriate to contact either your local police or a humane society police officer.
